The Kansas City Royals are a team that is going to be looking to utilize the 2026 MLB offseason to fully improve as a team, as they showed signs of progress in a 2025 season in which they finished with an 82-80 record.
This was shown when, in an effort to improve their outfield, they made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for Isaac Collins.

With solidifying their outfield a bit better, the next main focus for the Royals should be to upgrade their second base spot, and with that, they could look to trade with the Washington Nationals for CJ Abrams.

The Kansas City Royals have a solid core as a team that they can look to try and contend with, this core features Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, Salvador Perez, and Maikel Garcia. While this is a good start they must not get complacent, and with Jonathan India having struggled in 2025, they can’t roll with him at second base again.
Instead, they can look to Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, who has been listed as a trade target. While Abrams has been a shortstop, he has had some inconsistencies there, which could lead to him switching over to second base, where his defense would be better suited.
As far as things go from an offensive standpoint, CJ Abrams would bring a major boost. Over the last three seasons, he has had a .310/.426/.736 slash line with 57 home runs and 189 RBIs while also showing his shiftiness and base running ability with 109 stolen bases. Over his four seasons in MLB so far, Abrams is also coming off his best season in which he had a .257/.315/.433 slash line with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs.
With CJ Abrams having upside to be tapped into further, and being just 25 years old, he fits the timeline of the Royals, and makes for the ideal trade target for them to bank on. If Abrams can switch over to second base and excel, this move will further prove to be beneficial for Kansas City.
