The Atlanta Braves are looking to bounce back in 2026 and return to playoff contention after an offseason full of change. If they succeed, a major reason will be the play of right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who is entering his ninth season with the organization. The 27-year-old has long been one of the league’s most electrifying talents, though multiple injuries have sidelined him for extended stretches.
In 2025, Acuna did not make his season debut until May as he recovered from the second ACL tear of his career. Once he returned, however, he quickly reminded everyone of his superstar ability. Across 95 games, he posted a .290 batting average, a .417 on-base percentage and a .935 OPS, while adding 21 home runs and 42 RBIs. His production not only stabilized the Braves’ lineup but also earned him an All-Star selection and the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award.

There is still some concern heading into 2026 for Acuna, who saw both his defense and speed on the basepaths take a noticeable hit upon his return last season. Just two years removed from stealing 70 bases in a single year, Acuna managed only nine steals in 2025. His range in the outfield also declined, as he posted a Fielding Run Value of 8 according to Statcast’s Baseball Savant, despite still possessing one of the strongest arms in MLB. These numbers reflect the lingering effects of his second ACL tear, an injury that not only delayed his 2025 debut until May but also raised questions about how much explosiveness he could regain.
While there are no defensive projections available, offensive forecasts provide a glimpse of what 2026 might hold. Baseball Reference projects Acuna to hit .293 with a .390 on-base percentage, an .896 OPS, 19 home runs, 49 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. The most surprising part of this projection is the home run total of just 19. Considering Acuna hit 21 homers in only 95 games last season, it would be unexpected to see him finish with fewer long balls across a full campaign. On the positive side, the projection does anticipate an increase in stolen bases, which is exactly what the Braves hope to see. An offseason dedicated to strengthening and ramping up his body could allow Acuna to recapture the dynamic speed and athleticism that made him the 2023 National League MVP.
If Acuna can combine his elite bat with a return of his defensive range and base-stealing prowess, the Braves will once again have one of the most complete players in baseball leading their charge back to contention.
