The New York Mets are under quite a bit of pressure this offseason after losing Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, and multiple other stars in free agency.

They’ve responded by adding Devin Williams and Jorge Polanco. These two are some big steps down from the star talent the Mets have lost, but it’s better than nothing. Going forward, the Mets need to make some more moves to bolster their roster.

Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted on Saturday that the Mets would add Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez on a big contract in free agency.

“There’s certainly a chance that the Baltimore Orioles land Framber Valdez on a long-term deal, pulling one of the top hitters and starters out of MLB free agency,” Johnson wrote. “Right now, though, we tend to believe the Pete Alonso contract makes it less likely that Baltimore signs Valdez to a five-year deal.

“So, with Valdez’s market seemingly limited by clubs worried about his attitude over the catcher incident last season, his options are limited. It gives the New York Mets the opportunity to come in with a short-term deal with a higher AAV. Valdez will likely push for a deal of four-plus years, but we think he settles with a three-year deal to join the Mets rotation.”

Valdez is projected to sign a huge $190 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which is a number that the Mets can afford.

Adding Valdez would work perfectly for the Mets. They’ve gone more affordable in their bullpen and at first base, but their starting rotation needs to be upgraded the most. Spending the money on Valdez would be worth it in the long run.
