Jasson Dominguez

This is a PREDICTION, not a REPORT.

Jasson Dominguez was once one of the most hyped up prospects in baseball, but he’s yet to live up to these massive expectations through the first 149 games of his career. Here’s a trade idea that has Dominguez being sent to the Miami Marlins.

This time, we’ll be looking at Tristan Cockcroft’s trade idea from ESPN’s recent trade proposal article.

Cockcroft goes on to explain that, “have rendered Dominguez excess with top prospect Spencer Jones also an in-season debut candidate…Cabrera is a talented, albeit injury-prone, starter who can provide critical rotation depth while the team waits for the healthy returns of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt.”

The trade idea is simply for the Marlins to trade away Edward Cabrera in order to land Jasson Dominguez from the New York Yankees. Below, we’ll analyze if this move makes sense for both sides.

New York Yankees Trading Jasson Dominguez to the Miami Marlins

Now one thing is going to impact this deal, and that’s Cody Bellinger. Cockcroft does note that, “Presuming that the team re-signs Cody Bellinger, the Yankees will already have spent a majority of their available free agent budget,” which makes a lot of sense.

If Bellinger ends up going elsewhere, this deal doesn’t make a ton of sense. Between Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, and Bellinger, if he comes back, this outfield is already loaded.

If Spencer Jones lives up to some of the hype he’s been getting, that just becomes even more true. This move would make a ton of sense for the Yankees, as they would benefit a lot more from a high upside pitcher.

Does Jasson Fit Dominguez with the Miami Marlins?

On the flip side, the Marlins are coming off a season where they just won 79 games. In fact, the last time the Marlins won over 85 games was in 2009.

This team is in a rebuild, and they would absolutely benefit from getting younger. Cabrera isn’t super old at 27 years old, but compared to Jasson Dominguez at 22 years old, that’s significant.

Now, at the same time, the Marlins aren’t just going to blow everything up right now. Although 79 wins isn’t great, it’s a massive step up from the 62 games they won in 2024.

That’s why Dominguez is the perfect fit. Dominguez is ready to play and contribute to the Marlins in 2026 while being a great fit for them long-term at the same time.

With how the Marlins roster looks right now, Griffin Conine is projected to be the team’s starting right fielder in 2026. Ideally, Dominguez would come in to replace Conine, which would then leave the Marlins with a strong outfield core. That would consist of Jakob Marsee, Kyle Stowers, and Dominguez.

For the Marlins, this move would make a ton of sense, and it would be worth it for them to take a shot on Dominguez if possible.

Jasson Dominguez Contract

The two important numbers you need to know in terms of Dominguez are that he is arbitration eligible in 2028 and becomes a free agent in 2031.

Right now, Jasson Dominguez will be playing on his one-year, $820,000 deal for 2026 per Spotrac. All things considered, this trade idea could make a ton of sense for both the Miami Marlins and New York Yankees.
