TRENDING
Idle — Undrafted after his junior year at Iowa (.757 OPS), McCoy returned to school for his senior year (.868 OPS) and had little leverage when the Orioles drafted him in the sixth round. So he signed for $10,000 and began long winding path to the majors that took him as high as Triple-A with the Orioles. He was then traded to the Mariners and later to the Blue Jays, who brought him to the majors late in 2023 for a six-game cup of coffee. However, McCoy was designated for assignment shortly after his big-league debut, elected free agency after the season and signed a minor league deal with the Padres, whom had been impressed with his ability to handle shortstop. McCoy spent most of the season at Triple-A El Paso before Ha-Seong Kim’s shoulder injury opened a path back to the majors. McCoy got his first MLB hit in his Padres debut in August 2024 and hit in five straight games before back inflammation ultimately ended his season (.204/.278/.245 over 57 plate appearances). The Padres removed McCoy from the 40-man roster after the season but quickly brought him back on a minor league deal. A rash of injuries brought McCoy back to the majors in April only for a dislocated pinky to send him to the injured list. McCoy finally made it back to San Diego in late August and showed enough as a late-inning replacement on defense and on the bases for the Padres to include him on their NL Wild Card roster, although he did not get into a playoff game.

2026 OUTLOOK
McCoy has two option years left and with the Padres moving on from Tyler Wade — who signed with the Rangers this offseason — he’ll enter spring training looking to compete for a bench job. Even if McCoy doesn’t make the opening day roster, he’d likely be the first call-up if the Padres lost a middle infielder to injury.
