The Kansas City Royals confirmed that they have locked up one of their core infielders.The team announced Tuesday that it had agreed to a five-year contract extension with Maikel Garcia, which runs through the 2030 season and includes a club option for 2031. The deal covers Garcia’s first four years of salary arbitration and his first season of free agency.Garcia, 25, broke out in 2025, earning his first All-Star selection and winning a Gold Glove at third base. He was also a finalist for a Silver Slugger Award at the utility position.He set career highs across the board, playing in 160 games while hitting .286 with 170 hits, 39 doubles, 16 home runs and 74 RBIs. He posted a .351 on-base percentage, a .449 slugging percentage and an .800 OPS.Garcia also made franchise history, becoming the first Royals third baseman to record at least 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season. He was one of just two players in Major League Baseball to reach those marks in 2025, along with Cleveland’s José Ramírez.Defensively, Garcia ranked among the American League’s best. He finished with 17 Outs Above Average overall and led AL third basemen with 18 Outs Above Average at the position.The Royals plan to formally introduce the extension at a press conference on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium.
