The free agent sweepstakes for superstar infielder Alex Bregman is likely going to heat up in the coming weeks, and the Boston Red Sox make a lot of sense as a fit for him.

The Red Sox whiffed on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber earlier this winter, which has seemingly put a lot of pressure on the front office going forward. If they whiff on Bregman, too, they’re going to be in a very bad spot rolling forward.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield predicted on Wednesday that Bregman would sign a massive $170 million deal with the Red Sox this offseason.

“In the end, a return to Boston still makes the most sense,” Schoenfield wrote. “The Red Sox went after Schwarber and Alonso, and they need Bregman’s right-handed bat to help balance out the lefty-heavy lineup.”

The Red Sox likely would have preferred to have a slugger like Alonso or Schwarber, but they weren’t willing to give up the money to land them.

As a result, they’re backed against the wall in free agency.

Signing Bregman would still make a lot of sense. He was a fan favorite during his one year in Boston. The veteran was also one of the best players on the team.

Securing him on a big contract for the next few years would make a lot of sense, especially after missing out on the top sluggers.
