Drafted in the 10th round out of Army, Derek Berg was one of several 2024 draft picks to climb all the way to Double-A in their first full professional season.
It was Berg’s defensive work that allowed him to move quickly, as he threw out over 40% of attempted base stealers, while committing just four passed balls in over 500 innings behind the plate.
At the plate, he hit seven home runs in 88 games played, while also drawing an impressive walk rate of 14.3%. Although Berg hit just .230/.357/.372, while striking out one-third of his plate appearances.
Berg has a larger frame, being listed at 6’4″, but has shown some athleticism; he stole 10 bases on 15 attempts in 2025.Â
The defense helps him profile as a backup catcher, but he will have to improve the strikeout rate to make it to the majors. His contact rate did improve during his time in Altoona, but it was only a 35-plate-appearance sample.
