The Kansas City Royals and third baseman Maikel Garcia recently agreed to a five-year contract extension. By signing Garcia, the Royals’ left side of the infield is set for years to come with Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Garcia made an appearance on MLB Network on Thursday and shared his thoughts on his new deal with the ball club.
“Man, I feel great, amazing, happy,” Garcia said. “My Mom is happy, family’s happy, friends. And, you know, I’m happy to stay in Kansas City for next five years.”

Garcia, a 25-year-old, has certainly earned his new contract. The infielder had a breakout season in 2025, hitting .286/.351/.449 to go with an .800 OPS. He also earned his first All-Star selection and his first Gold Glove.
It was a big campaign for Garcia, who is becoming one of the better third baseman in the entire sport.
Garcia, a natural shortstop, moved to third base with the Royals as Witt took over shortstop duties. For Garcia, though, he has embraced playing a new position.
“When they signed Bobby… I played third my first year,” Garcia said on MLB Network. “But they asked me if I could play third when I was in Triple-A. So, I said, like, ‘I never played third. I can play second, but I just want to be in the big leagues and wherever you guys need me, I’m gonna be there.'”

Witt is the Royals’ shortstop of the future. As a result, Garcia needed to switch positions. Kansas City clearly appreciated Garcia’s game, but they needed to make room for Witt — who has always featured an MVP-caliber ceiling.
While Garcia seemingly was more comfortable moving to second base at first, Kansas City clearly felt he could handle the hot corner. The decision worked out, as Garcia won a Gold Glove in 2025 and is now the Royals’ third baseman of the future.
Kansas City’s roster still has room to improve overall, but the Royals are building around a reliable core of players. This ball club could become a true contender in the American League Central division with a few more quality additions.
As for Garcia, his ceiling is exciting. He will have an opportunity to get even better, which is surely a frightening thought for opponents following his big ’25 campaign.
