Detroit – He said all along that he wanted to do it. The only issue was how it might impact his spring preparation going into his final season before he hits free agency.
But his desire to represent his country won out.
Tigers ace lefty Tarik Skubal has agreed to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic this spring.
“Honored to be given the opportunity to represent my country and share the room with all the other talented guys,” Skubal said in a text message Thursday night. “Can’t wait to share this experience with all the other guys.”
The two-time Cy Young winner joins a pitching staff that so far includes Paul Skenes, Joe Ryan, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, Logan Webb, David Bednar and Mason Miller.
Team USA announced the news Thursday morning.
The World Baseball Classic will take place in multiple sites from March 5 through March 17. Team USA is in Pool B which begins play at Daikin Park in Houston.
