The Boston Red Sox desperately need to add an infielder to their roster this offseason. They have holes at first base and third base right now, while Marcelo Mayer is expected to take over at second base. However, the Red Sox could add a second baseman and move Mayer over to third base.

Russell Dorsey of Yahoo Sports predicted the Red Sox would land a blockbuster trade for Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte that would send prospects Payton Tolle, Kristian Campbell, and Franklin Arias back to Arizona.

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte

“The Red Sox have had their hand in a little bit of everything this offseason, and after striking out on big boppers Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso, they can get their guy with Marte. Marte isn’t your average second baseman,” Dorsey wrote. “He’s one of the best players in baseball and just a year removed from a third-place NL MVP finish in 2024. The acquisition of Marte would give the Red Sox the elite bat they need in the middle of their lineup, without requiring the team to move many foundational pieces.”

This is quite a steep price for the Red Sox to pay this offseason, especially considering Tolle and Campbell are expected to be key pieces of the team’s future, but adding Marte would be a huge upgrade.

Marte is one of the best middle infielders in baseball. His bat makes him as valuable as any player on the trade block right now. This would help the Red Sox close the gap on the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East, even if the price is quite steep.
