Just How Much Is Miami Marlins’ Edward Cabrera Worth?

The bigger question for the Miami Marlins though is just what this Grayson Rodriguez trade means for the value of Edward Cabrera on the market, period.

Reportedly, Cabrera is one of the most likely to be traded members of the Marlins organization right about now. Many an analyst have either him or Sandy Alcantara halfway out the door already. While Alcantara is obviously in his own tier, there are actually a lot of similarities to be made between Cabrera and Rodriguez. Ultimately, it’s a case of whether the MLB front office at the other end of the line wants to take a glass half full or a glass half empty approach.

If you take the what have you done for me lately view, Cabrera is easily the more attractive option. In a breakout 2025, he produced a 2.8 WAR season, with three double digit strikeout peformances. Over his final twelve appearances down the stretch, seven were quality starts. After an injury scare, he came back to mostly prove a return to full health, helping to eliminate the Mets from the playoffs with five scoreless innings in his final appearance.

Rodriguez, of course, did not throw a single pitch last season. He has also never thrown for more innings in the majors than Cabrera’s 137.2 IP in 2025.

On the other hand, neither has Cabrera. He’s got plenty of injury baggage himself, and almost all of it has been scarier stuff than anything that has sidelined Rodriguez to this point. It’s been almost all lat strains for him, whereas Cabrera landed on the IL this September with a dreaded elbow sprain, and dealt with shoulder issues the previous two seasons.

Plus, Rodriguez was always the higher regarded prospect. Cabrera has had a better MLB season than him, but once you get under the hood, plenty of scouts would still likely tell you Rodriguez is the better talent.

Thus begging the question: what does this Rodriguez-Ward deal say about Cabrera’s value?

Is he worth more or less than a Taylor Ward type talent? More to the point, should he worth more or less than Rodriguez?

As for whether or not Cabrera could fetch a Taylor Ward, that feels like a safe yes. Any MLB team in need of a starting pitcher they can immediately count on for flashing top of the rotation caliber production, and with hitting to spare, makes that deal. As mentioned earlier, I’m admittedly viewing Ward’s 36 HR 2025 as more fluke than a sign of things to come. In other words, more MLB regular than MLB star. The Marlins could do with a couple more proven big league regulars though, and that kind of talent means more to a lineup like Miami’s than it does to a team like…well, like Baltimore’s to be honest.

Consider the perception flip there, if Miami had made this trade, dealing Cabrera to the Angels for Ward. The Marlins have plenty of lefty outfielders to feel good about, but less so when it comes to righties. What they absolutely don’t have are a pair of established stars like Rutschman or Gunnar Henderson. A Ward type player being added to the Marlins lineup moves the needle in a way it wouldn’t for the Orioles or their fans.

But as to whether Cabrera or Rodriguez is worth more in that vacuum? That’s hard to say, for all the reason’s outlined, and comes down to just how risk averse a particular front office happens to be feeling.

If the answer to that question is in favor of Cabrera, than Miami needs to move him ASAP, and enjoy that roster upgrade.

If the answer is Rodriguez though? Then that could indicate that the Marlins are going to be even more tempted to bypass trading Cabrera, and start fielding more calls for Alcantara.

Only time will tell, but it sure feels like a safe bet that the Marlins will be trading a starting pitcher sooner than later.
