Mike Campbell – a former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and first-round MLB Draft pick – has died at the age of 61, his ex-team has announced.

Campbell made his major league debut in 1987 after being selected with the Mariners’ No 1 pick, before going on to pitch for Seattle in spells over the next three seasons. He was eventually traded to the Montreal Expos as part of the deal to sign Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.

‘We are saddened by the passing of Seattle native and former Mariners pitcher Mike Campbell. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones,’ the Mariners wrote on X Friday.

Details regarding a cause of death for Campbell are yet to be released.
