The MLB community learned Saturday that a former first-round pick and longtime pitcher passed away at the age of 61.

Mike Campbell reportedly died this past Monday at his home in Kirkland, Washington. The official cause of death hasn’t been announced at this time, but an update should be released by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Campbell, who grew up in Washington, started his MLB career with the Seattle Mariners in 1987. He spent three seasons with his hometown team before being traded to the Montreal Expos in a deal that included Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson.

The right-hander from Newport High School also played for the Texas Rangers, an Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs during his MLB career.

Campbell finished his time in the MLB with a 12-19 record, 5.86 ERA and 135 strikeouts.

“We are saddened by the passing of Seattle native and former Mariners pitcher Mike Campbell,” the Mariners said. “Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.”
