The New York Mets entered the offseason needing to make a splash after a horrendous second-half collapse that saw them miss the playoffs.

Well, the MLB Winter Meetings didn’t go well as they watched Edwin Diaz sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pete Alonso sign with the Baltimore Orioles.

Sure, the Mets signed infielder Jorge Polanco, but so far, these weren’t the moves fans were hoping for in Queens.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report had some winners and losers of free agency, and the Mets are one of the losers after a series of unfortunate decisions.

“Edwin Díaz was arguably the best closer in all of baseball in 2025, as well as in 2022 and 2018. But he opted out of the final two years on his contract, declined New York’s qualifying offer and turned down their reported three-year, $66M contract to instead sign with the Dodgers for $3M more…In Díaz’s stead, the Mets have invested $73M in Devin Williams (three years, $51M) and Luke Weaver (two years, $22M), who did such a mutually problematic job in clutch situations for the other New York team this past season that the Yankees went out and traded for David Bednar, Camilo Doval and Jake Bird ahead of the deadline, hoping to find something that would work,” Miller wrote.

And, Miller notes that the Mets not even giving Alonso an official offer was another puzzling move. And, planning to play Polanco is yet another one that has fans wondering.

Before all of that, the Mets traded away fan-favorite Brandon Nimmo in exchange for Marcus Semien, so it has been an offseason full of question marks for New York.

However, there could be some moves, as Miller notes, with players such as Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker being linked to the franchise in some degree.

“But as we wait to see if they’re going to sign either Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger, the current outfield situation is Juan Soto, Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor. Worst of all, they’ve done nothing whatsoever thus far about their starting rotation, which posted a 5.27 ERA over the final 93 games and was perhaps indisputably the main reason they crashed, burned and missed the playoffs.”

Going into the offseason, this surely doesn’t appear to be what fans were hoping for, and with January coming soon, they might need to hurry and make a splash signing before it is too late.
