Jose Berrios

*This is a prediction*

The Toronto Blue Jays made a big move when they added to their pitching staff with signing Dylan Cease. With this signing, they now have their top ace to go with the rest of the rotation that features Cody Ponce, Trey Yesavage, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Jose Berrios who is now a trade candidate.

This deep of a rotation opens up the door for trade possibilities as the Blue Jays could look to advance the team in other areas. One trade candidate very well could be Jose Berrios, and if he is made available, the Philadelphia Phillies make sense to trade for him.

The Phillies are firmly in a win-now phase, operating with one of baseball’s larger payrolls and the flexibility to pursue a pitcher like José Berríos to stabilize the rotation.

While Zack Wheeler remains the staff ace, he is coming off September surgery related to blood clotting, a procedure that carries an estimated six-to-eight month recovery timeline and adds some uncertainty entering next season.

Aaron Nola is coming off a difficult campaign in which he posted a 6.01 ERA, while Cristopher Sánchez emerged as a true frontline starter, finishing second in National League Cy Young Award voting behind Paul Skenes.

Jesús Luzardo also proved to be a solid fit, going 15–7 with a 3.92 ERA. With Ranger Suárez set to hit free agency, Philadelphia currently has a clear opening at the back end of the rotation.

That vacancy creates a logical opportunity for Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies to explore a trade for Berríos. Adding a dependable veteran starter would help solidify the rotation while allowing top prospect Andrew Painter additional time to ease back from Tommy John surgery.

Painter could begin his return in a bullpen role before transitioning into the rotation down the line, especially with uncertainty surrounding Wheeler’s long-term future beyond 2027.

From Toronto’s perspective, a deal could help restock a farm system in need of depth. The Phillies could part with a lower-level prospect as part of a return package, with a young arm such as Yoniel Curet potentially drawing interest from the Blue Jays as they look to rebuild organizational pitching depth.
