The Toronto Blue Jays have shown interest in third baseman Alex Bregman this off-season and have been in contact with his agent, Scott Boras, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal wrote Saturday evening in The Athletic that Toronto is among a list of teams eyeing Bregman that includes the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks, among others.

All off-season, the Jays have been rumoured to be pursuing a reunion with Bo Bichette or a deal with outfielder Kyle Tucker, the consensus top free agent on the board this winter. Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reported during the winter meetings earlier this month that Bregman could be a backup plan if the Jays do not sign one of Bichette or Tucker. But as Rosenthal notes, Bregman could be more than that, with Toronto valuing his leadership and defensive ability.

Rosenthal also mentions that Bregman’s former Houston Astros teammates George Springer and Myles Straw could add to the fit in Toronto.

The 32-year-old third baseman had spent his entire career with the Houston Astros before joining the Red Sox last winter on a three-year deal that carried an opt-out after the first season. Bregman exercised that opt-out and according to The Athletic’s Tim Britton, he’s projected to receive a deal in the neighbourhood of six years and $171 million this time around.

Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 114 games for Boston in 2025. He made the All-Star Team for the third time in his career and also had his highest OPS (.821) since the 2019 campaign.

After coming just two outs from winning the World Series, the Jays have already been significant players so far this off-season, signing free agent right-hander Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. They also agreed to three-year deals with right-handed starter Cody Ponce and righty reliever Tyler Rogers.
