The Padres are reeling in South Korean infielder Sun-Mung Song on a four-year deal that will guarantee the 29-year-old $15 million, the Union-Tribune confirmed.

The Associated Press first reported the final financial terms of a deal first reported last week. Song will make $2.5 million in 2026, $3 million in 2027, $3.5 million in 2028 and another $4 million in 2029 if he does not opt out. Half of a $1 million signing bonus will be paid in January and the other half in January 2027.

There is also a $7 million mutual option for 2030.

Song’s employer, the Kiwoom Heroes, will also receive a $3 million posting fee from the Padres. MLB teams signing players from Korea owe a posting fee of 20% of any contract worth $25 million or less.

The Padres announced Song’s signing on Monday. He’ll be introduced to the San Diego media via a video conference call at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Song is a .283/.347/.431 hitter across parts of nine seasons in Korea, although he’s coming off a career year in which he set career-highs in homers (26), steals (25) and slugging percentage (.530). Song also hit 19 homers and drove in 104 RBIs while posting a career-high .927 OPS in 2024, when he was a KBO All-Star.

Song has defensive experience at third base, second base and first base. However, A.J. Preller, the Padres’ president of baseball operations, spoke of third base and second base as possibilities on Friday after Michael King’s news conference while also touching on the versatility they expect from a good chunk of the team’s roster.

“We know he can play third and second base,” Preller said Friday. “I think if we’re able to get across the finish line in the next few days I think we’ll talk about other ways for him to go. We’ve seen other players we’ve had that have been really good infielders that have gone out and played in the outfield. We’ve seen some guys that are second basemen that have become really good first basemen. If you’re a baseball player and you’re a very good defender and you’re skilled with the glove, you usually have the ability to go out and play other spots.”
