The New York Mets made another big roster move Monday, sending veteran utility man Jeff McNeil to the Athletics with cash in exchange for 17-year-old relief pitcher Yordan Rodriguez.
The Mets have lost several big names this offseason, such as Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, but have also made some important additions. They signed Devin Williams to a three-year contract before Diaz departed, and signed second baseman Jorge Polanco on Dec. 16.

They still a few holes to sort out on their roster before Opening Day, but The New York Post’s Jon Heyman expects them to bring in more players before the end of the offseason.
“McNeil trade was logical and expected, and continues the roster turnover,” Heyman wrote via X (formerly Twitter). “And don’t worry Mets fans, there will be more players coming!”
McNeil was a likely candidate to be traded all offseason, but even more so following Polanco’s signing. McNeil spent a majority of his time last season at second base, and with the acquisitions of Marcus Semien and Polanco the 33-year-old didn’t have much of a role.

The veteran still has plenty of gas left in the tank, though, as he enjoyed a solid 2025 season and will play a big role in a promising A’s team as their starting second baseman.
He posted a .746 OPS in 2025, hitting 12 home runs for the second season in a row and logging 54 RBIs. McNeil rarely strikes out and gets on base plenty, which is perfect for a high-slug team like the A’s.

As far as who the Mets should target, their biggest priorities are signing a bat to replace Alonso — who has hit 30 or more home runs in all of his full MLB seasons since his debut in 2019 — and patching up their rotation, which ranked 18th in MLB in terms of ERA last season.
New York freed up some funds after trading McNeil, and they’ll look to capitalize in a free agency market with plenty of All-Stars still up for grabs.
