The New York Yankees added depth at the catcher position when they signed Ali Sánchez to a minor league deal earlier this month.

Sánchez appeared in six games for the Boston Red Sox last season but had just two plate appearances. He was designated for assignment in August, cleared waivers and became a free agent.

The 28-year-old spent most of September with the Red Sox and was on the taxi squad for Boston’s American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees.

Sánchez elected free agency in October.

The New York Mets ultimately signed the catcher and was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse. His time with the Mets organization was short-lived as the Red Sox re-acquired Sánchez in a trade that sent cash to New York.

In 50 MLB games across four seasons with the Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins, Toronto Blue Jays and Red Sox, Sánchez slashed 183/.220/.233.

It’s likely Sánchez will begin the 2026 season in Triple-A with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
