After signing a four-year, $78 million deal with the New York Mets, that has come to a close, and now Starling Marte is a free agent.
Starling Marte might be way past his prime with now being 37 years old, but he can still provide experience and value to a contending team. There have been rumors of a potential return to the New York Mets, but another team that makes sense to sign Marte is the Toronto Blue Jays.

Starling Marte Signs With the Toronto Blue Jays in MLB Free Agency
The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2026 MLB offseason with new expectations after they ended up reaching the World Series, and pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to Game 7 before they fell short and lost. Now, they must look for ways to advance the team this offseason, and for them to accomplish this, they also need to look at building out the depth of the team.
One spot more depth is needed is in the outfield. While Daulton Varsho, and George Springer played well, the Blue Jays saw Anthony Santander underperform. This led to Santander getting some time at the designated hitter spot, but that is where Springer is slated to be for 2026. This creates a bit of a mix-up in the outfield that the Blue Jays will need to figure out, and signing Starling Marte could be the route they go.
Starling Marte had a .270/.335/.410 slash line with a .745 OPS, nine home runs, and 34 RBIs last season, but has dealt with a nagging right knee injury that has held him back a bit the last two seasons. This has led to him splitting time between the designated hitter spot and the outfield, but on the Blue Jays, he could find himself in an outfield platoon due to the talent they have.
This would give Starling Marte days to rest and prolong his longevity throughout the entire season to keep his impact consistent on a contending team, while the Blue Jays add someone who can help provide a boost in their lineup while also being a rotational option in the outfield to fill out the depth. This is a move that makes sense for both sides.
