The San Diego Padres made a solid, but short-lived move ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
At the time, the Padres needed a power boost in the middle of the lineup. One way they solved the issue was by acquiring All-Star slugger Ryan O’Hearn in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. O’Hearn played in 50 games down the stretch for San Diego in 2025 and slashed .276/.350/.387 with four homers and 20 RBIs.
O’Hearn entered free agency after the season. On Tuesday, FanSided’s Robert Murray reported that the 32-year-old is in agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a two-year deal.

“A splash for the Pirates: Free-agent first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a two-year, $29 million contract, according to sources familiar with the deal,” Murray wrote on X.”It includes $500K in performance bonuses in each season.”
San Diego got O’Hearn at a time when it needed some more offense in the middle of the order for the stretch run. The 32-year-old did what the club needed and now is cashing in.
Pittsburgh will be an interesting team to watch when the 2026 season gets here. The Pirates have the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner in Paul Skenes and acquired two-time All-Star Brandon Lowe on Dec. 19. Now, the club reportedly is in agreement with another All-Star.
