With the continuation of MLB free agency, one of the key catchers that remains available is JT Realmuto. It could have been assumed early on that he would end up returning to the Philadelphia Phillies, but as time goes on, it seems like that might not be the case.
If JT Realmuto can’t get the contract he is looking for from the Phillies, there is another team that makes sense to sign him instead, and that is the Miami Marlins.

JT Realmuto Signs With the Miami Marlins in MLB Free AgencyÂ
The Miami Marlins are entering the 2026 MLB offseason while being in a weird spot. They are close to being a contending team, but clearly need more talent if they are going to take that next leap. With the amount of young talent that they have, one big goal for them this offseason, if they truly want to compete in 2026, is they need to add veterans.
One spot in particular that the Marlins need a veteran presence at is their catcher spot. Currently, they have Agustin Ramirez, but he struggled in 2025. It is clear that it is too soon to expect him to become the true starter, and that the Marlins need to give him more time to develop. They need someone who can help mentor him while also providing an impact, and that is where they can turn to signing JT Realmuto.
When it comes to JT Realmuto, he is coming off a 2025 season in which he had a .257/.315/.384 slash line with 12 home runs and 52 runs batted in. Between the defense he provides behind the plate as a catcher, while also being able to provide power in the batting lineup, he is an ideal free agent for a team in need of a catcher to sign.
With JT Realmuto, he has been around MLB for 12 years. He has spent the last seven seasons playing on the Philadelphia Phillies, but spent the first five seasons playing for the Marlins. A return back to Miami could end up being beneficial for both sides.
