A former Cleveland Guardians prospect is taking his talents up north. So north that he’s going to play for the Toronto Blue Jays. According to a report by Guardians Prospective, Venezuelan prospect Jorge Burgos has officially left the franchise.
He’ll now try his luck in Canada:
“Cleveland Guardians 23yr old (1B/OF) prospect Jorge Burgos has signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2026 season. Burgos had been with Cleveland since signing as an international free agent back on 1/9/2019 out of Venezuela,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.
The first baseman/outfielder spent last season at Double-A Akron. A 23-year-old southpaw, he logged 73 RBI with 14 home runs and slashed .206/.295/.386 over 98 games there, repeating that level of play for the second time in his career.
Burgos closed out the campaign on the Injured List, and he’s now slowly trying to work his way back to full strength in the Venezuelan LVBP. He was more disciplined at the plate last season and cut down his swing-and-misses, striking out just 23.3 percent of the time and logging a 10.6 percent walk rate.
Unfortunately, that less aggressive approach also took a toll on his numbers. He wasn’t as productive and ultimately didn’t get the nod to try his luck at Triple-A with the Columbus Clippers. It’ll be up to the Blue Jays’ coaching staff to help him find a more balanced approach at the plate.
He has some impressive physical tools at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, and even though his career with the Guardians didn’t pan out as expected, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen this team let a prospect walk and then bring him back at some point in the future.
