The Chicago White Sox were able to add another player to their 26-man roster as they signed left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb. Newcomb has split time in his career as a starting pitcher and a reliever, but now with the White Sox, he could be used in different roles. The 26-man roster is going to be intriguing to see, but Chicago has some options on how they want to use him. Let’s take a closer look at Newcomb and discuss what is being reported surrounding what the team will be allowing him to do this season.
The Chicago White Sox could see Sean Newcomb getting starts

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the White Sox are going to allow Newcomb the opportunity to be a starter, following him signing a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the team on Tuesday morning. Newcomb split time between the Boston Red Sox and Athletics last season and was 2-5 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.345 WHIP in 92.1 innings. He did make five starts over 48 appearances.
Throughout his career, Newcomb has been more effective as a reliever as he is pitching to a 4.41 ERA as a starter while throwing to a 3.84 ERA out of the bullpen. However, he is going to be in the back-end of the rotation competing with Anthony Kay for a spot in the starting rotation. With the team being aggressive during the Rule 5 Draft to add relievers Jedixson Paez and Alexander Alberto, the team can use him as a starting pitcher.
Newcomb has a six-pitch arsenal and has been able to limit the number of barrels against him. This is going to be a great spot for the White Sox to develop a starting pitcher and potentially flip him for an asset at the trade deadline.
