Arizona baseball on Tuesday officially announced the hiring of Sean Kenny as pitching coach.
Kenny brings nearly three decades of experience to Tucson. He has coached at multiple power-conference schools, most recently at Iowa this past season.
“We all strive to be part of a program where the realistic expectation is a national championship,” new UA pitching coach Sean Kenny said. “Arizona is that place.”

“We could not be more excited about the addition of Sean Kenny to our staff,” UA coach Chip Hale said in a news release. “Coach Kenny brings a tremendous amount of experience with consistent success throughout his career, and I have no doubt that he will be the perfect fit for our program and our culture. Coach Kenny’s reputation in this business is phenomenal, and we are looking forward to having him work with our pitching staff.”
The need to hire a pitching coach arose when John DeRouin left the program earlier this month for a job in the New York Mets organization. DeRouin was promoted to pitching coach in June after Kevin Vance became the head coach at San Diego State.

Kenny, 53, helped the Hawkeyes’ pitching staff improve dramatically last season. He spent the previous year at Houston. Before that, Kenny was the pitching coach at Georgia for six seasons. The Bulldogs made the NCAA Tournament three times during that span.
“I am extremely excited and honored to be part of the University of Arizona baseball program,” Kenny said in the release. “We all strive to be part of a program where the realistic expectation is a national championship. … Arizona is that place. I am very appreciative of Coach Hale and the staff for giving me this opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started.”
