The final review of the 2025 season will be looking at each position in the Astros farm system. Next up is the second base position.
After a strong 2024 campaign, Matthews followed it up with another productive season at Triple-A in 2025. Matthews’ offensive production showed significant improvement as well, with his wRC+ jumping from 28 in 2024 to 118 in 2025. That performance earned him a call-up, and he went on to make his major league debut later in the season.

At the major league level, there are still some questions surrounding second base heading into the 2026 season. While the Astros still have José Altuve, it appears his time as an everyday second baseman may be nearing an end. The club also acquired Nick Allen, an elite defender who could see time at the position. From the prospect side, Matthews presents an intriguing option with significant upside if the Astros choose to give him an opportunity. With several capable infielders in the organization, how Houston ultimately deploys its infield talent in 2026 will be something to watch.
