The Cincinnati Reds have yet to land a big bat in free agency.

They may be trying to add some thump to their lineup from the bargain bin.

On Wednesday, they signed Michael Chavis to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, according to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

There’s some legitimate intrigue to this signing.

Chavis is 30 now, but he entered pro ball as a first-round pick in 2014 by the Boston Red Sox.

He has more than 1,000 MLB at bats.

Chavis spent parts of three seasons with Boston, then parts of two with the Pirates before appearing in a partial campaign with the Nationals.

All told, he’s a .238 hitter with a .685 OPS.

But Chavis has had a couple big stints.

His rookie campaign with Boston featured 18 home runs in 95 games and a .766 OPS.

Then in 2022 with the Pirates, he played in 129 games and hit 14 home runs. That was after an .857 OPS in the latter stages of the 2021 season once he joined Pittsburgh.

Chavis hasn’t played in the majors since 2023, but he’s looking for a path back.

The Reds are a playoff contender with a great rotation that could really use a breakthrough bat. Maybe Chavis can be that guy.
