The New York Yankees lost both Luke Weaver and Devin Williams to their crosstown rival, the New York Mets, in free agency this offseason.

Weaver had been with the Yankees since 2023 and became a major part of their bullpen fairly quickly. He signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Mets and posted a goodbye to the Yankees and their fans on Instagram.

“From my career coming to what felt like an end and overwhelmed with injuries and failure … it seemed destined that the next chapter of my life was within reach,” Weaver wrote on Instagram on Monday. “The Lord had other plans for me and they were bigger than I could have asked for. Yankees fans and those that really showed me your love/support … thank you from the bottom of my heart. What a ride it was and a rejuvenation I longed for. Another new chapter begins for me but the memories are forever. Grateful and humbled. To God be the Glory.”

The Yankees claimed Weaver off waivers after he was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in September 2023. He went on to appear in 129 regular-season games, posting a 3.22 ERA. During the 2024 season, he stepped up as the team’s closer at the end of the season. In the Yankees’ run to the World Series, he notched four saves and finished eight games.

Weaver became a versatile weapon for Aaron Boone. He was able to give the team multiple innings, close games, pitch in high-leverage spots and put out fires. Pretty much anything Boone needed, he was able to do. He had a 3.62 ERA in 64 games last season.

With Camilo Doval and David Bednar coming over at the trade deadline, the Yankees did not feel a need to pay Williams or Weaver. The two will now attempt to help the team in Queens get back into the postseason.
