Former and current pro athletes are being recruited as guest speakers, but the shot at $5,000 is strictly for amateurs.

The Summerville High School Baseball First Pitch Banquet is scheduled from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at Summerville Country Club. The event will feature a silent auction, MC Robbie Robbins, putting contest with a $5,000 prize, speakers, appetizers, Lowcountry Boil, fried chicken and cash bar.

“We are going to feed you and give you a chance to listen to some good music and dance a little bit,” Summerville coach Thane Maness said. “There will be some really good silent auction items from golf apparel to autographed items, Green Wave gear, and items donated by local businesses. The money raised will go directly to our program this year and benefit the guys playing now and the next few years.”

Tickets are $65 per person and available at https://square.link/u/sacjeOxZ. For more information email coach Thane Maness (dmaness@dorchester2.k12.us), Amy Hutto (amyhutto3@yahoo.com) or call Mike Patterson at 843-568-0145.

“The putting contest will be done through Jody Riggs Coastal Golf Marketing,” Patterson said. “We will have qualifying rounds and then it will come down to putt offs and finally one putt for the five grand. We will probably add an adjacent contest to make it more interesting. Certified PGA players aren’t eligible for the prize, but they can pay to putt for giggles if they want.”

Summerville has a rich athletic history that has produced athletes in multiple sports who have went on to thrive at the collegiate level. Several of them even had success at the professional level.

The school’s hallway leading into its main gym has photos of more than a dozen former Green Wave football players who were drafted into the NFL. Last Spring the Summerville Baseball team was presented with a banner honoring the latest Green Wave alumni selected in the MLB draft (Steven Jackson, Bryan Altman, Daniel Lloyd, TJ Hopkins, Brody Hopkins, PJ Morlando, Cole Messina and Carson Messina).
