Right now, nobody knows what the New York Mets are doing.

Pete Alonso left for the Baltimore Orioles, Edwin Diaz signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers, and Jeff McNeil was dealt to the Athletics.

At least the Mets signed Devin Williams and former Seattle Mariners infielder Jorge Polanco, although neither one of those is anywhere near as exciting as bringing back Alonso or Diaz.

The Mets have plenty of work to do, and Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report had the Mets as third on his list of six teams with a lot of work left in free agency.

“Considering the Mets traded Brandon Nimmo and saw both Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz leave in free agency, it’s going to be difficult for president of baseball operations David Stearns to come out of this offseason a winner. With that said, Stearns acquired Marcus Semien in return for Nimmo, and then inked Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million deal. The Mets could still trade Jeff McNeil and/or Mark Veintos, so you can’t argue they are running things back following a 28-37 second-half collapse,” Kelly wrote.

But, Kelly did offer an “ideal” solution, and it would be to sign New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger.

“Perhaps the best way to attack the remainder of the offseason would be to get players with positional flexibility. Depending on how things play out with McNeil and Vientos, the Mets could have needs in left field and at first base. Center field was already a need. Cody Bellinger is capable of playing all three of those spots, wasn’t eligible to receive a qualifying offer and has proved he can succeed in multiple major markets. Mark Feinsand recently told Hot Stove on MLB Network (h/t Logan VanDine of SI.com) that the Mets are “very in” on Bellinger, who clubbed 29 home runs for the cross-town rival Yankees this past year,” Kelly wrote.

The Mets could also use pitching, as Kelly noted, although they have plenty of young pitchers. But, bringing in a veteran to the rotation would make sense, and the team has reportedly been engaged in some type of conversations with a trade for Padres starter Nick Pivetta.

While losing several players is not a promising sign in Queens, everything could get at least a bit better by adding somebody such as Bellinger, although we have no clue what the franchise is thinking right now.
