Paul Goldschmidt

As December continues, and MLB free agency progresses, Paul Goldschmidt still remains a free agent. While he is not the player he once used to be, he can still provide an impact to a team in search of first base help for the 2026 MLB season.

*Prediction*

The team that could end up looking to sign Paul Goldschmidt and be the perfect fit is the Washington Nationals.

Washington Nationals Sign Paul Goldschmidt in MLB Free Agency

The Washington Nationals have created quite the first base issue for themselves. After they ended up cutting Nathaniel Lowe last season, and have now seen Josh Bell depart in free agency, they are lacking the talent at first base like they once had, and that is an issue.

Washington, when it has come time to address the first base spot in the past, typically have gone the route of signing low-risk options that can provide serviceable play. That approach can be expected to continue as the Nationals have plenty of roster holes left to fill this offseason.

One way in which the Nationals can do so is by signing Paul Goldschmidt. While Goldschmidt might be 38 years old for the 2026 season, and his power might not be what it once was, he changed his approach in 2026 to be a contact-first hitter, which proved to be successful as he still had a .274/.328/.403 slash line with 10 home runs, and 45 runs batted in.

Paul Goldschmidt can still provide valuable production to the offense, which is exactly what the Nationals need right now. In addition, they also need an experienced player that can help in the development of the roster, and guide them back on the right track, and the free agent that fits that mold is GoldSchmidt.
