4) At least one more relief pitcher we can be proud of
Devin Williams and Luke Weaver were needed additions to the bullpen. However, the Mets still let Edwin Diaz go and haven’t made enough moves to make us truly believe in the relief corps. One more move and maybe we can trust what they’ll throw onto the mound once the starter exits.
A look at the current Mets bullpen, we see room for one significant addition. A player like Adbert Alzolay remains a bit of a wild card and with a minor league contract to his name, he isn’t a must to start the year in the majors. Huascar Brazoban is optional and shouldn’t hold the team back from an additional move. Players like Cooper Criswell, Richard Lovelady, and Austin Warren are DFA candidates the team would love to pass through waivers and should keep around if they do.
Free agency and trades offer the Mets a wide assortment to pick from. It doesn’t necessarily even have to be a $10+ million arm. Plenty of quality arms are signing for around half of that so there isn’t an excuse to not add someone else.
The best move the Mets can possibly make would probably be to snatch up a San Diego Padres pitcher in a trade. Those rumors seem to have cooled off at the moment. But because San Diego has yet to resolve their payroll issues, adding to it with the Michael King signing, the urgency and need for them to strike a deal with the Mets remains.
