In 2026, the Chicago Cubs will select 23rd overall in Major League Baseball’s Draft. A year ago, outfielder Ethan Conrad out of Wake Forest was the organization’s first round pick (17th overall). While the draft is still seven months away, this year MLB Pipeline has the Cubs going with an unconventional selection in their first Mock Draft.
2026 MLB Mock Draft has the Chicago Cubs selecting second baseman Chris Rembert

As MLB Pipeline pointed out in their article, second basemen are not typically selected in the first round of the draft. However, Chris Rembert of Auburn University has shown to be a force offensively, with potentially more upside, therefore putting his name in consideration of being a first round selection.
As a freshmen, Rembert posted a .344/.467/.522 slash line with 10 home runs, 14 doubles, 46 RBI, and 37 walks to 36 strikeouts. His scouting report card indicates that he has some of the quickest hands in college baseball with an advanced approach at the plate. If he can figure out how to put the ball in the air more, the power numbers could improve, potentially to the ability of being a 15 home run type of player in the big leagues.
Defensively, Rembert looked very comfortable at second base and also has experience at both corner outfield positions. While he lacks the speed and range to handle shortstop or center field, Auburn put him in spots where he was most comfortable, and he thrived there.
Following his sophomore season, Rembert will be eligible for the MLB Draft, and if he produces similar, or improved, results, his profile as a potential first-round selection should remain intact. That type of performance would likely put him squarely on the Cubs’ radar. If his production dips, Rembert could opt to return to college for a third season to reestablish himself as a high-end prospect, but the foundation of his skill set still makes him an intriguing target for an organization like Chicago.
