Longevity in baseball has become more of a norm over the years, with some players playing well into their late 30s or even 40s. This trend has gone on for a little bit now, and it’s helped keep some careers going strong.

*PREDICTION*

As we get set for the 2026 MLB season, veteran right-hander Justin Verlander will be 43 years old when next season kicks off in the spring. But despite this fact, Verlander has remained very open about wanting to keep his career going strong, with him potentially pitching until he is 45 years old.

Verlander is coming off his lone season with the San Francisco Giants, and he proved that he could still produce at a high level on the mound. With this, there have already been a few teams interested in adding him to the mix this winter, and now it’s up to Verlander to decide where he wants to sign.

The veteran likely will sign a two-year deal, so this could end up being the final contract of his legendary career. Verlander may not be the Cy Young star that he was a couple of years ago, but as a backend starter, teams could do a lot worse than him.

The former ace posted an ERA of 3.85 in 29 starts with the Giants this year, and he was able to help bolster the rotation. If Verlander can put up these types of numbers next season, he could end up being one of the biggest steals of the winter.

However, it remains to be seen where the veteran will land, especially due to his desires are unknown at this time. Verlander may prefer to join a contending team, but at this point in his career, going to the team with the best fit could also be a priority for him.

Seattle Mariners Take Big Swing on Justin Verlander

One team that could look to take a chance on the veteran arm is the Seattle Mariners, who are coming off a deep playoff run. Seattle came within one game of the World Series, and the team has been looking for different ways to improve the roster this offseason.

Adding to the starting rotation could be one way to help themselves, and Verlander could be a perfect low-risk addition to the pitching staff this winter. Verlander can easily slide into a backend starter role, and the Mariners staff would gain a lot of depth with him in the mix.

With the Mariners being a contender for the World Series this season, Verlander would get a chance to go after another World Series title. His leadership could be massive for this squad, and he knows what it takes to win at the highest level.

Verlander won two World Series titles with the Houston Astros, so he could bring his veteran voice to the Mariners to help them get over the hump. If anything, the two sides could be a strong pairing, with each giving the one something that they need for the 2026 season.
