TMZ Sports obtained footage showing officers responding after an abandoned Ford was found in the landscaping outside the Capitol. While searching for the driver, officers heard fire alarms sounding inside the building and rushed in to investigate.

Police soon encountered Gunnar Schubert, 29, outside the building. Officers ordered him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs. Before being detained, Schubert tossed away a can of lighter fluid, according to the footage.

After securing Schubert in a patrol vehicle, officers entered the Capitol to assess the damage. Inside the office of State Representative Liz Berry, officers reported finding a smashed window, which they said had been broken with two hammers.

Elsewhere in the building, officers observed broken glass, smoke in the State Reception Room, and a burned flag. One officer also noted what appeared to be cigarette ash in part of the building.

Schubert was initially booked on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief. Prosecutors later charged him with second-degree burglary, a felony, and third-degree malicious mischief, a gross misdemeanor.

Before his arrest, Schubert played college baseball at Gonzaga, appearing in 110 games with five home runs and 56 RBIs. He was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 27th round of the MLB draft and reached Single-A Jupiter before being released.

Schubert is scheduled to appear in court again next month as the case moves forward.
