Will Venable must decide if there is a fit for Yoan Moncada on the White Sox roster.
The Chicago White Sox have had plenty of top prospects in the last decade, many of whom did not pan out.
The White Sox are interested in bringing back one of those top prospects.
Francys Romero of Beisbol FR reported on Friday that the White Sox are among the teams interested in signing third baseman Yoan Moncada.
Several teams, including the Angels, Pirates, White Sox, and Blue Jays, have shown early interest in free-agent third baseman Yoan Moncada, per sources.
Despite thumb and knee issues, Moncada had a solid 2025 and could contribute even more next season among third basemen.
Moncada’s tenure with the White Sox did not go as planned. He was once the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, but did not live up to his potential.
More on Moncada’s Tenure With the Chicago White Sox
The White Sox thought they had acquired the next superstar in baseball after trading superstar pitcher Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a package centered around Moncada and pitcher Michael Kopech back in late 2016.
Moncada would debut with Chicago the following season in 2017. While hitting just eight home runs with a .750 OPS, he showed promise. The following season was a mixed bag, with Moncada striking out a league-high 217 times.
In 2019, Moncada finally broke out, hitting 25 home runs with a .315 batting average and .915 OPS.
It seemed that Moncada had truly arrived in the major leagues. However, it did not last long. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, his batting average went down nearly 100 points, as he struggled after contracting the virus.
In 2021, it looked as if Moncada was going to bounce back. However, his power numbers took a hit as he struggled with long-COVID, hitting just 14 home runs with a .787 OPS.
During his last three years with the White Sox, Moncada was hampered by injuries, playing in just 208 games from 2022 to 2024. He didn’t regain his power either, hitting just 23 home runs during that time period.
The White Sox declined Moncada’s team option after the 2024 season. He spent 2025 with the Los Angeles Angels, playing just 84 games, hitting 12 home runs with a .783 OPS.
Now, Moncada hits free agency. But will he re-sign with Chicago, or will he sign with a different team?
What Does Moncada Bring to a Team?
Moncada brings a strong glove at third base normally. He did, however, have -13 Outs Above Average in limited time in 2025, per Baseball Savant, raising concern.
But health has been the main issue throughout his career. When healthy, he brings great upside as both a hitter and defender. He won’t hit 30+ home runs in a season, but he has solid power when healthy.
Another poor quality for Moncada is his eye. Moncada has struck out 993 times in his career and walked just 338 times.
In addition, Moncada has poor speed after his long-COVID, with the 24th percentile sprint speed in 2025.
While Moncada hasn’t had good availability most of his career, he brings upside, even in his age-31 season. However, Moncada does have a good fit on the 2026 White Sox roster.
With the White Sox’s infield crunch currently, and many more to come with prospects and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft, this could just be surface-level interest more than anything.
