The New York Yankees have been notably quiet when it comes to offseason moves over the past two months, although they did make an unexpected signing on Saturday.
The Yankees have added 32-year-old first baseman Nick Torres to their roster, per New York Daily News’ Gary Phillips. Torres doesn’t have any MLB experience. He was, however, the MVP of the Mexican League in 2025, hitting a torrid .345 with a 1.147 OPS and 27 homers.
Apparently, Brian Cashman and the rest of New York’s front office believes Torres has a chance to translate some of that production to the big leagues, where he might be able to spell Ben Rice at first base from time to time in 2026.
The Yankees have reportedly signed Nick Torres, a 1B/OF who was the 2025 MVP in the Mexican League.

Torres is a pro baseball journeyman. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he advanced through the minors, reaching Triple-A with the Padres and later the Texas Rangers organization by 2018. Despite strong performances, he never debuted in the majors and last played affiliated ball in ’18.

Transitioning to the Mexican League in 2019, Torres found his stride. Joining the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna in 2021, he posted impressive numbers, including OPS marks over 1.000 in recent seasons. His 2025 campaign proved exceptional: a .425 on-base percentage, .730 slugging, and 79 RBIs in 86 games, earning him the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol MVP award, as aforementioned.
