The Chicago Cubs were one of the best teams in baseball last season, yet they haven’t made a move this offseason to capitalize on that. However, there may be one move that could shock the MLB.

According to Fansided’s Zachary Rotman, that move is upgrading their pitching staff by getting a new ace in NPB superstar Tatsuya Imai.

“Picking a favorite for Imai is pretty difficult, especially with a threat like the New York Yankees seemingly not expressing much interest, but the Chicago Cubs make too much sense. The only possible excuse they could have for not spending on Tucker would be to pivot that money to the frontline arm their rotation desperately needs. Yes, Jed Hoyer typically shies away from spending big on pitching, but if the Cubs want to be taken seriously at all, they ought to make a big move. If it isn’t Tucker, Imai makes the most sense,” Rotman wrote.
In eight NPB seasons, Tatsuya has a record of 58-45, an ERA of 3.15, 907 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.267 over 963 innings pitched. Pair him with Shota Imanaga, and the Cubs have the best 1-2 punch in their division.

Imai is projected to receive a six-year, $157 million deal, which would definitely cost less than trying to retain Kyle Tucker. It would also give them the starting pitching upgrade they desperately need.
If the Cubs are smart, they’ll go all in on getting Imai. They have less than a week to get him, and he could be the major facelift the rotation needs.
