The Detroit Tigers, despite their historic regular-season collapse, showed they have what it takes to compete in the postseason. A huge part of that was due to Tarik Skubal.
He was dominant on the mound, and now, with this upcoming season being his last before free agency, there’s a lot of attention on Skubal and his future in MLB. But, he’s far from the only Tigers player drawing such heated interest.
As Jason Beck of MLB.com notes, Skubal is joined by top prospect Kevin McGonigle in players drawing significant interest from around MLB this offseason. But, unlike Skubal, McGonigle is drawing attention for the start of his Tigers career, not his end.
Tigers’ Kevin McGonigle is drawing a lot of hype this offseason
“Arguably no Tiger besides Tarik Skubal has as much attention surrounding him this offseason as McGonigle,” Beck writes, “who soared up prospect rankings by posting a .991 OPs across three levels of the farm system and then earned Arizona Fall League MVP honors.”
McGonigle is 21 years old and could be making his MLB debut as early as 2026. He’s the most interesting prospect to watch for the Tigers by a wide margin, as the potential he flashed in 2025 was enough to justify a top-of-the-league ranking.
This past season, his .991 OPS was impressive, as was his .305 batting average, and 19 home runs, 31 doubles, 80 RBIs, 101 hits, and a 59-46 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

Not only does he rarely strike out, have solid power, and is an overall incredible hitter, but he’s also an incredible base runner, with 32 stolen bases over the last two seasons and across 162 games.
McGonigle is one of the best prospects in Major League Baseball, and he has a chance to make the Opening Day roster as a starting infielder for the Tigers.
While Skubal’s future is uncertain regarding whether he’s going to play in Detroit beyond 2026, McGonigle is drawing a lot of attention thanks to the hype surrounding his MLB debut and his next six years in Detroit.
