KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – On Saturday night, those at Union Station took to social media to announce support for a downtown baseball stadium for the Royals. The building was also lit blue both Saturday and Sunday nights.
“The time has come for downtown baseball, and a return to where the story first began… in the heart of Kansas City, where we gather to celebrate its triumphs, traditions, and most cherished moments” was just a portion of the statement posted to the Union Station social media pages this weekend. It continued, “Now, a new chapter in Kansas City’s baseball story is ready to unfold”.
The responses were mixed on social media, but many fans at Union Station Sunday afternoon said they agreed.

“I think it would be so awesome,” said Hanna Ellett. “I think more people would come and watch and support. It being in the center of downtown, it would be more accessible for more people to come.”
“I think it would be pretty cool,” said Avery Kenslow. “Kauffman is pretty iconic the way that it is, but I think having all the restaurants and stuff around the stadium would just make the coolest environment.”
“It would just connect more with everything,” said Lucillia Wickline. “I think it would just work better.”
The posts come less than a week after the Chiefs announced plans to move the team to Kansas, building a new stadium in Wyandotte County and its team headquarters and practice facility in Johnson County. The move has made officials on the Missouri side turn to focus on keeping the Royals. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has continually stated Washington Square Park would be the perfect spot for a downtown baseball stadium, the location right across the street from Union Station.
“I had a conversation with Governor Kehoe, with County Executive LeVota, and everyone is working together and is locked in to make sure we can do good work to keep that team, not just in Kansas City, but to build a transformational downtown facility,” said Lucas while speaking to media on Dec. 22.
A downtown baseball stadium has been in talks for several years, with the Royals announcing intentions to move to the Crossroads ahead of a stadium sales tax extension vote in 2024. Jackson County voters voted against it, with 58% voting no.
