The Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly are moving on from Esteury Ruiz.
Per ESPN’s Alden González, the Dodgers have traded the outfielder to the Miami Marlins. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that Los Angeles landed right-handed pitcher Adriano Marrero in return for Ruiz.
Ruiz, 26, made his MLB debut in 2022 for the San Diego Padres but was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers halfway through the year. He then spent two seasons with the Athletics before being traded to the Dodgers ahead of the 2025 campaign.
In 19 games, Ruiz batted .190 with a home run, two RBI and four stolen bases. Ruiz has yet to see significant action outside of the 2023 season, when he played 132 games. That year, he collected a .254 batting average with five home runs and 47 RBI. He also had 67 stolen bases, which was the second most in the majors.
Ruiz will look to get that kind of playing time in 2026 as a member of the Marlins.
Marrero, an 18-year-old out of Cuba, spent last season with Miami’s Dominican Summer League, where he recorded a 3.82 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 10 starts.
In landing Marrero, Los Angeles sacrificed an elite pinch-running option, but it landed the team some young talent as it looks to the future while also maintaining its current success.
