The Chicago Cubs have yet to do much of anything this offseason, and most Cubs fans probably aren’t too surprised by their lack of activity.
Chicago has been linked to multiple big names in free agency, such as pitcher Tatsuya Imai and third baseman Alex Bregman, but as of now, it doesn’t appear that anything is close on that front for the Cubs.
So is it possible that Chicago emerge empty-handed as far as landing legitimate talent this winter?
Based on this assessment by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, that could very well be the case.
In a piece where Reuter outlined each team’s biggest need or the remainder of the offseason, he listed the Cubs’ infield depth as their most prominent issue and then connected them to a target that won’t excite anyone: Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Could the Chicago Cubs sign Isiah Kiner-Falefa and call it a day?

Not only did Reuter list Kiner-Falefa as a potential target for Chicago, but he went as far to say that it could be final move of the winter.
“With the relief corps restocked and the rotation filled after Shota Imanaga accepted his qualifying offer, shoring up the bench with a versatile infielder might be the final piece of the offseason puzzle,” Reuter wrote.
Yes, Kiner-Falefa is versatile in the fact that he can play a variety of different positions at a high level defensively. That’s all well and good. But his bat has been subpar throughout his entire MLB career.
The 30-year-old slashed .262/.297/.334 with two home runs and 40 RBI over 459 plate appearances between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays in 2025 and owns a lifetime .262/.311/.349 slash line. He has never posted an OPS of .700 or better, topping out at .699 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign and hovering in the mid .600s throughout the rest of his time in the big leagues.
At least he is consistent.
There would be nothing wrong with adding Kiner-Falefa as a utility guy off the bench, but as a final move? Yeah, Cubs fans would be irate if that occurred.
Why did the Chicago Cubs spend $6 million on “black cat” bad-luck Hunter Harvey?
