Two days after the Marlins traded Dane Myers to the Reds, Miami acquired an outfielder to take his place on the roster. Esteury Ruiz, formerly of the Athletics, was acquired via trade from the Dodgers. Ruiz spent most of the 2025 season in the Minors.
Dodgers trade Ruiz to Miami
As noted above, Los Angeles (NL) traded outfielder Esteury Ruiz to the Miami Marlins in exchange for a Minor League pitcher.
Ruiz played in 19 games for the Dodgers after Los Angeles (NL) traded for him last April. The A’s designated him for assignment in late March, and he spent most of the year in Triple-A Oklahoma City. He batted .303/.411/.514 (.925 OPS) with 16 home runs and 47 extra-base hits, plus 62 stolen bases.
Now 26 years of age, Ruiz was the American League stolen base king back in 2023. Ruiz stole 67 bases but was demoted to Triple-A early in the 2024 season. He’s seen just 48 MLB contests since the start of 2024.
Ruiz didn’t whiff much in the 2023 season. However, he barely walked (4.0% BB%) and expanded out of the zone frequently. But this past season, he chased pitches outside of the zone only 24.9% of the time.
The move gets ahead of what would have been future business for the Dodgers. Ruiz had been optioned three times (2022, 2024, 2025) in his MLB career and would have needed to be DFA’d had he not made the team’s roster out of camp. Now, that becomes the Marlins’ issue.
Even though Ruiz is a plus runner, he may very well be an option for the Marlins in either left or right field. Most of his fielding experience at the MLB level has come in left field.
Jakob Marsee started 44 games for the Marlins in center field this past season. Kyle Stowers flipped between left and right field. He spent most of his time in left.
In return, the Dodgers acquired 18-year-old right-handed pitcher Adriano Marrero. Marrero, who pitched in the DSL this past year, struck out 35 batters over 33 innings.
Other moves
The Marlins designated infielder Eric Wagaman for assignment as a corresponding move. Wagaman was a regular for the Marlins in 2025, as he played 140 games for Miami. He struck out 100 times and walked 32 times.
However, he slashed .250/.296/.378 (.674 OPS) for the Marlins.
The Orioles, meanwhile, designated Will Robertson for assignment. It is a corresponding move to re-add Zach Eflin, who re-signed on December 28, to the 40-man roster.
