The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the MLB teams most frequently brought up in trade speculation and rumors this offseason. As has been the case for multiple years now, offseason trade rumors involve the Brewers trading away one of their high-profile players as their time under club control comes close to an end. Last offseason, it was Devin Williams. The one before that, it was Corbin Burnes.

This year, the rumors involve Freddy Peralta, their two-time All-Star ace who is entering the final year of his contract with the Brewers. In addition to his stellar performance in 2025, his $8 million salary for 2026 makes him a tempting trade target for just about every MLB team.

For their part, though, Milwaukee does not seem too keen about moving Peralta, preferring to compete for a World Series with their ace on the roster. However, one player that they have been known to be shopping has been named in a proposal that would reunite him with the general manager who drafted him.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell could be a trade target of the New York Mets

One of the players that the Brewers were actively shopping during the Winter Meetings was outfielder Garrett Mitchell. As fans may recall, it was Isaac Collins who was traded to the Kansas City Royals, along with Nick Mears, for Angel Zerpa.

However, Mitchell remains a target that many view as a low-risk, high-reward type player that could potentially be snagged in a trade.

In fact, Aaliyan Mohammed of Newsweek believes that New York Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns could go out and get his former prospect:

“The Brewers have Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio as locks in the outfield. Christian Yelich was primarily a designated hitter, but the Brewers could want him playing more left field next year. They also have Blake Perkins, who is not a great hitter but a phenomenal defender. Jake Bauers can also play in the outfield when needed. However, the player the Mets should target is Garrett Mitchell.

“Stearns was the Brewers’ general manager when they drafted Mitchell with the 20th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Mitchell is a five-tool player, but injuries have been a huge concern. However, when healthy, he can be a game-changer. He has played just 141 games in his career.

“The Brewers have outfield depth and are always in the market for prospects. Mitchell is 27 and under club control through 2028. They may be willing to part with him for an outfield prospect. The best outfielder in the Brewers farm system right now is Braylon Payne, who is still in Single A.”

As one can see, Mohammed believes the Brewers could trade Mitchell to the Mets for an outfield prospect because, as he notes, Milwaukee has just four outfield prospects among their top-30.

With Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick manning the corner outfield spots, Mitchell’s only chance for everyday playing time is in center. And while that is where the Brewers would love to play him, he has rarely been healthy.

With Blake Perkins on the roster, despite his offensive deficiencies, it may be a good idea to get something for Mitchell while they still can.
