In the current environment of sports, with athletes as instruments of all types of gambling, the poetry of sports has become lost. There are no Red Smiths writing about “absent friends” nor Grantland Rices about “The Four Horsemen” of Notre Dame. But Dr. Alan M. Langlieb has done an exceptional job in reviving that way of writing about sports in welcoming Pete Alonso to Baltimore (“Alonso’s is opening this spring,” Dec. 29). We can only hope that much more “poetry” will be written about him and the Orioles going forward.
