The San Diego Padres have been rumored to be listening to offers for a multitude of expensive stars this offseason, and while some good players are getting trade interest, some are off limits.

One of those players who’s popped up in trade rumors is Fernando Tatis Jr., but he’s much more in line with the “off limits” trade candidates than an actual, feasible option for teams.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan, in response to a fan question about a trade of Tatis, shut down such a deal for multiple reasons. This Cincinnati Reds-Padres trade rumor did not last long.

“No,” Passan responded, “I don’t think Tatis would waive his no-trade clause to go to Cincinnati.”

It’s a clear-cut answer from Passan. Tatis, even if the Reds offered a package impossible to refuse from the Padres perspective, Tatis’s no-trade clause would be invoked, and no such deal would happen.

The fan’s proposed offer for Tatis wouldn’t be the worst one for the Padres to take, however. As it would involve Hunter Green and multiple prospects coming to San Diego for Tatis.

The Padres need starting pitching help, and Hunter Greene, a cheap star who’s under control for four more seasons on said cheap deal, would be an ideal addition.

But, as Passan put it from the Reds’ perspective, “There’s a formula for small-market teams. Trading for high-priced stars ain’t it.”

A Padres-Reds trade involving Tatis wouldn’t ever happen, especially if the offer included Hunter Greene and more.

Tatis isn’t going to be going anywhere this offseason, even if the Padres receive a stunning, hard-to-refuse offer.

Padres fans should rest easy knowing Tatis likely isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The future is always up in the air, but for now, Tatis is staying in San Diego.
