At the beginning of the season, Mason Fluharty was on the verge of making the Blue Jays’ bullpen but was reassigned to Triple-A after Spring Training. Although he wasn’t included on the opening day roster, Fluharty has likely concentrated on refining his skills in the minors to show he’s ready for a spot on the major league team.

Blue Jays reliever Mason Fluharty has been incredible for Toronto early this season.

Vanessa Serrao from the Jays Journal writes that just over a month later, the 23-year-old has delivered valuable innings for the Blue Jays’ bullpen, posting a 2-0 record and a 2.25 ERA over 12 appearances with 11 strikeouts. His dependable performance has been driven by an effective two-pitch mix featuring a cutter and a sweeper.

“Fluharty also comes equipped with a solid platoon-neutral arsenal while also possessing solid control and command on the mound. The Blue Jays drafted him in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He had a 3.63 ERA with 76 strikeouts in Triple-A last year with the Buffalo Bisons, which put him on the MLB radar for the Blue Jays in 2024.” -Serrao

He debuted on April 2 and has consistently performed like a legitimate MLB reliever ever since, ranking in the 88th percentile for expected batting average (.197) and the 80th percentile for limiting hard-hit balls (33.3%).

Mason Fluharty, big leaguer!

The @BlueJays’ No. 19 prospect dots the zone for his first MLB strikeout.

He’s relied heavily on his cutter (62%) and sweeper (38%), quickly establishing himself as a dependable option for middle- to high-leverage situations, especially when the Blue Jays’ bullpen is lacking depth.

“Fluharty been a pleasant surprise for the Blue Jays and has bolstered their bullpen. Fluharty has only allowed a run in two of his 12 appearances this year, and has also had three multi-inning outings this year, which demonstrates his versatility. It’s looking like he’s a part of the Blue Jays’ young core.” -Serrao

Fluharty began the year as a long shot to crack the Blue Jays’ roster, but he’s quickly becoming a standout in Toronto. While the team is still searching for consistency, Fluharty is shaping up to be a clear organizational success.
