The New York Yankees’ lineup was among the strongest in MLB last season, thanks in large part to the improved depth and contributions in the outfield, most notably from Cody Bellinger.
In 2025, Bellinger fit seamlessly into the roster, providing excellent defense and steady offensive production after arriving via trade from the Chicago Cubs. The 30-year-old left-handed slugger posted a .272 batting average, .334 on-base percentage and .813 OPS, while adding 29 home runs and 98 RBIs across 152 games.

He finished 14th in AL MVP voting, and his presence in the outfield was viewed as a major success. His ability to balance power with consistency gave the Yankees a reliable bat in the middle of the order, while his glove stabilized the defense in a crowded American League race.

Now entering unrestricted free agency, Bellinger’s future has become one of the most pressing questions of the offseason. The Yankees cannot afford to lose him if they hope to remain contenders in the American League, especially with the Toronto Blue Jays spending aggressively.

Bellinger’s versatility and proven track record make him a rare commodity, and his departure would leave a significant hole in both the lineup and the clubhouse.
On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported an update on the Yankees’ pursuit of Bellinger, noting that his former team, the Cubs, have joined the sweepstakes.
“Cubs checked in on old friend Cody Bellinger. They’re also known to be in touch with Bregman, Bichette and other top players. The incumbent Yankees remain in talks with Bellinger, their stated No. 1 priority. Mets, Dodgers, Giants are among others showing interest in Bellinger,” Heyman wrote on X.

This development adds to the growing list of suitors for Bellinger. The Cubs are not the only team with familiarity, as the Los Angeles Dodgers also loom as a serious threat given their past experience with him and their seemingly unlimited payroll flexibility.
The competition for his services is expected to intensify, and the Yankees will need to act decisively if they hope to keep one of their most important pieces in pinstripes.
Bellinger would be a worthy investment given his accomplishments. He is a former Rookie of the Year, National League MVP, two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner, with plenty of postseason experience. That combination of accolades and October pedigree makes him one of the most valuable free agents on the market.
