District 9’s “Championship Monday” set for Memorial Day at both Showers and Heindl Field was completed Friday with another full slate of games in both baseball and softball taking place.

And, three teams from the Tri-County Area — DuBois Central Catholic baseball and saoftnall as well as Redbank Valley baseball — punched their ticket to their respective championship contests.

Monday Class A baseball final, set for 5 p.m. at Showers, features a familiar matchup as top-seeed DuBois Central Catholic and second-seeded Clarion meet for the third year in a row with the championship at stake. The Bobcats are the two-time defending D-9 champs.

DUBois Central Catholic baseball (17-3) reached the finals with a 10-2 win against Port Allegany on Friday.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth before DCC exploded for four runs in both the third and fourth innings ti grab control of the game. Both teams then scored twice in the sixth as DCC proved to be the squad to move on.

The Cardinals got big contributions from the bottom half of their lineup, as hitters 6-9 combined to go 6-for-9 with seven RBIs.

Freshman Evan Burton led attack, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Trenton Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Brayden Zatsick had two hits and a pair of runs scored out of the No. 2 spot in the order.

Carter Himes was the beneficiary of all that offense, as the righty tossed six strong innings to get the “W.” He allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits while striking out eight and walking five.

Blake Pisarchick three a scoreless seventh to finish off the win.

Meanwhile, second seeded Clarion edged third-seeded Elk County Catholic in the other Class A semifinal.

Clarion made a pair of first-inning runs stand up in what prove to be a classic pitcher’s duel.

Jack Breindel got the start for ECC and tossed 3 2/3 innings — allowing just the two first-inning runs (both earned) on four hits while striking out four and walking three. Matthew Gilmore came on to relieve Breiddel in the fourth and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Crusaders just couldn’t get anything going against the Clarion dup of Derek Smail and Dylan Smail.

The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead into the fifth before ECC got on the board when Frankie Smith doubled home Gideon Cronk after Cronk had singled with one out.

That proved to be ECC’s lone run though as Clarion held on for the one-run victory to punch its ticket to yet another D-9 championship game.

Elk County finished with seven hits in the loss, which saw the Crusaders’ resurgent season end with a 14-4 record.

In Class 2A baseball. second-seeded Redbank Valley made the finals with a thrilling 1-0 walk-off victory against third-seeded Kane on Friday.

Redbank’s Braylon Wagner returned from competing in the 100 dash prelims Friday morning at state track to pitch five shutout innings of one-hit ball in getting a no-decision. He struck out seven and walked one.

The Bulldogs, who had just five hits themselves, won the game when Carson Gould drew a bases-loaded walk with one out to force home Jordan Smith with the game’s lone run.

Redbank Valley (13-7) will battle fourth-seeded Curwensville in the finals Monday at noon at Showers Field.

Curwensville, the No. 4 seed in Class 2A, blasted top-seeded Moniteau on Friday, as the Golden Tide rolled to a 19-2, 3-inning victory. In Class A softball action Friday, third-seeded DCC returns to the finals with a 9-0 shutout of second-seeded Otto-Eldred.

Rylee Kulbatsky tossed a two-hit shutout for the Lady Cardinals, striking out 14 and walking none.

She was backed by an offense that got her the lead with a three-run second before breaking the game open with five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Lily Davidson and Marina Hanes each went 3-for-4 to lead the DCC attack. Hanes had a triple, RBI and two runs scored, while Davidson drive in four runs. Kiki Foster also had two hits and a RBI.

Central will now battle top-seeded Curwensville in Monday’s final at 5 p.m. The Lady Tide blanked Northern Potter, 7-0.
